Meet Hanayrá Negreiros – The PIPA Foundation Resident

From October 16 to December 17 of last year, applications were received for The PIPA Foundation‘s residency project in London, in partnership with the Chelsea College of Arts and TrAIN at UAL, for Brazilian curators at the start of their careers, up to the age of 35. Between January 29 and February 8, 2024, five selected candidates, out of more than 50 applicants, took part in an interview that would define the person to be awarded the opportunity.

After careful consideration and a rigorous selection process, The PIPA Foundation chose Hanayrá Negreiros to take part in the residency. Her innovative approach, creativity, and commitment to advancing the curatorial field impressed the selection committee. The quality of her project aligns perfectly with the goals of the residency, fostering cultural exchange and new perspectives between Brazil and the UK. The members of the Foundation believe that this experience will not only provide valuable insights for Hanayrá, but also contribute significantly to the cross-cultural dialogue and enrichment of the curatorial landscape.

Hanayrá Negreiros is a fashion researcher and curator, who’s studying for a PhD in History at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP), holds a master’s degree in Religious Science from the same institution and a bachelor’s degree in Fashion from the Anhembi Morumbi University (UAM). Her research focuses on the history of dressing and fashion in the African diaspora in Brazil, with a special interest in curatorial practices, photography, religiosity and family memories. She has experience in the areas of education, arts, museums and fashion studies, working mainly on the following topics: fashion and clothing, art history and Afro-Brazilian cultures.

See below the video the curator sent us, in which she introduces herself and talks about her expectations for the experience in London:

Hanayrá will spend four weeks in London, from July 15 to August 12, 2024, where she will have the opportunity to develop her curatorial research, with access to the world’s leading museums, art galleries and libraries. At the end of the residency, she will present her project, write an article for the PIPA Institute‘s website and take part in the PIPA Prize 2025 Nominating Committee.

This is the first initiative of The PIPA Foundation, which was born as a UK arm of the PIPA Institute, created in 2009 to document and promote the vibrant world of Brazilian artistic expression. The PIPA Foundation is committed to promoting the growth and recognition of Brazilian contemporary art beyond Brazil’s borders – with the common goal of supporting artists, curators and researchers, facilitating their development and showcasing their remarkable creations and studies to a diverse international audience.

Keep an eye on The Foundation’s website and PIPA Prize’s platforms and social media to find out about the next steps and developments in Hanayrá’s research, who will be sharing updates with us from London.
